Cushing's syndrome: ectopic ACTH production by an islet cell tumour of the pancreas demonstrated by angiography.
This picture shows the arterial phase of a coeliac axis arteriogram. The procedure was carried out to define the blood supply of a pancreatic tumour which had been previously demonstrated by CT. The pancreatica magna artery is enlarged and its branches are stretched over the surface of a large pancreatic tumour. The splenic vein was shown to be patent on later films. At operation a large tumour of the pancreas was removed. Histological examination showed an islet cell tumour which was thought to be malignant. The tumour contained ACTH and the patient was cured of his Cushing's syndrome upon its removal.
